Importance of a complete and clear structured specification

Your pcb specification defines all important details for production of a highly complex and electronical product. Those files serve very often as base of a quite often very expensive procurement and production process.
Pcb files must save all information which are necessary to order the product not only today but also in the future at different suppliers. Each speculation has to be avoided to save the reproducibility:
• form,exection and handling
• procurement and timing
• production and cross checking with original datas
• archiving of the intellectual property and extended instructions
• saving of versions, releases, make and hold deliveries

Due to the distribution of the specification to subdepartments within the company, external customers and suppliers we often face querries and communication mistakes. All those things result later on too often in late deliveries!

problems on nowadays specifications:
Methods these days show generall problems and increase the danger of production mistakes or delay the production due to many unnecessary querries.
• highly educated and experienced pcb designers do not have an appropriate aid to draw up the complete basic datas of their designs without mistakes, as CAD programs do not support this topic. The existing work time is quite often more than 20-40%.
• secondly confusing paperfiles require a lot of time in the draw up of production details.
• always changing files often result in mistakes at production and adoption.


Most of the pcb specifications are drawn up with many different systems. Some of them are:

• textfiles;formtemplates in wordprocessing software
• description in order or email texts
• formtemplates in excel- files
• info textfiles
• fill-in pdf docs
• manual questionnaires
etc.

problems in notes:
• nowadays CAD tools are not designed for drawing up documents
• tool limitations effect limitations on documents
• the used documentation files require extensive translations of datas
• filing often takes more than 40% of the CAD cycle
• even small projects do require this high demand of time for documentation
• it is very susceptible for mistakes due to the non-intelligent and manuel process
• production and quality differ depending on the interpretation of the producer
• Critical eye of the needle in this development chain is again the important specification


There is also quite often no security on those documents what means that templates are not protected from changes. The needed uniqueness of a scpecification is not given with the distribution via email.

Just think of the following: designer is reworking and changing the circuit board and the specification.
Purchasing department is ordering at the same time the circuit board with the old specification. Besides the time and financial damage so far you still generate costs for the cause research and the repeat order etc.In worst case the pcbs are already assembled what results again in additional costs.
